GLUSZA

On December 2, 2021, a webinar was held on the subject of Deaf Art – a trend in art that has its roots in the work of deaf artists in the United States.
Deaf Art is a branch of critical art, it deals with topics related to the issues of biopower, audism, discrimination against the Deaf and exclusion. Our guest was Nancy Rourke – a pioneer of the trend, one of the most recognizable American artists. Together with the curators of the exhibition Głusza (Dagmara Stanosz, Michał Justycki, Agnieszka Kołodziejczak, Michał Burdziński), she talked about art, identity, communication and the culture of the deaf.
This image is a self portrait Nancy painted in 2010. This was from a radio talk. Interview editors: Weronika Stencel and Paulina Pikiewicz, who invited guests from the Silesian Museum in Katowice to the Chorzów studio: Dagmara Stanosz – curator and educator, Michał Justycki – curator and educator of the Deaf and Nancy Rourke – artist, precursor of deaf art from the United States to Katowice at the invitation of the Silesian Museum. The meeting was also attended by sign language interpreters: Irena Piecha – translator from Polish sign language to phonic and Damian Rzeźniczak – deaf translator from American Sign Language into Polish. The broadcast deals with the social situation of Deaf people, their culture and art, incl. works by Nancy Rourke and an exhibition planned at the Silesian Museum as part of the interdisciplinary project entitled “Wilderness.
